How Vulnerable are Medical Practices in Australia?

Medical practices in Australia are increasingly reliant on technology to store and share patient information. This reliance has made them a target for cybercriminals, who have attempted to access patient data through malware and ransomware attacks. Cyber security is therefore an important consideration for any medical practice, in order to protect the confidentiality of patient information.

The criticality of services delivered by the health sector is of high importance and any disruption of service could be catastrophic. Therefore, more the reason for medical practices to adopt sound security solutions to keep themselves always online and protected.

Covid-19 has further changed the landscape of the medical industry. Patients have increased the use of telehealth facilities, which require a stable and secure connection. Any vulnerabilities, in the network, could be utilized by a potential attacker. Changes to social and working environments, such as working from home, have made the public vulnerable to cyber attacks.

The Current Threats Facing Australian Medical Practices

Malware downloaded from malicious emails or websites is the most common type of security incident that medical practices are experiencing. Many medical practices are seeing a wide variety of other attacks, as well, including:

  • Unauthorized access and hacking incidents.
  • Theft of customer data, including credit card information.
  • Ransomware attacks.
  • Theft of critical business data and electronic files by external parties and insiders.

How you can Keep your Practice Safe from Cyber Attacks?

We recommend Six (6) security capabilities for Healthcare and medical practices to deal with the ever-expanding threat landscape:

  • Zero-Trust Network Access (ZTNA) – No one is trusted with your patient data unless they are verified and authenticated by this tool. Here, you get to decide who has access and who does not.
  • Secure Web Gateway (SWG)- Protecting all devices at your practice from malware and other threats by preventing users from accessing malicious website traffic on the internet.
  • Remote Browser Isolation (RBI)- Providing your practice with risk-free Internet access 24/7. This keeps untrusted browser activity as far away as possible from the PCs and Laptops used at your practice. This will help protect your practice against data loss, theft or misuse.
  • Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW)- will protect your most valuable assets from cyber attacks. This is a must-have for medical practices in Australia as they are your best line of defence against hackers and cyber threats.

Every Branch in the Pacific Islands Deserves a Firewall: Why Cybersecurity Matters

Why Cybersecurity Matters

Remote Branches in the Pacific Islands are often left behind when it comes to technology and infrastructure. This leaves these branch Networks vulnerable to cyberattacks, as they don’t have the same level of protection as the head office. Cybersecurity is a critical issue that needs to be addressed to keep these branches safe.

These branch offices may not be handling sensitive data or critical infrastructure, but they are still susceptible to cyber attacks. In fact, many attackers will target these types of branch offices because they know that they are often left unprotected.

That’s why it’s so important to make sure that every branch office in the Pacific Islands has a Next-Generation Firewall in place. With an integrated SD-WAN (Software-Defined WAN) and Next-Generation Firewall, these branch offices can be protected from the ever-growing threats of cyber attacks.

The right Secure SD-WAN solution can play a key role in providing superior protection against the latest Cyber Threats and providing better connectivity for Business Critical Applications.

Benefits of having a Next-Generation Firewall at the Local Branch

A Next-Generation firewall provides improved data performance and better security for the branch. Next-Generation firewalls also eliminate the need to hairpin traffic back to the central site for inspection which can improve WAN performance.

Not all SD-WAN is created equal. Secure SD-WAN uniquely designed to meet the Pacific Islands’ needs are far and few between. The right SD-WAN solution will not only provide the security but it will also optimise traffic across different WAN links, including MPLS, LTE, VSAT and even broadband. This can help to improve performance and reduce costs.

Whether your branch is running TPNG, Digicel, TFL or Vodafone – the right SD-WAN can give you end-to-end visibility of your traffic flows and security profiles.

Next-Generation firewalls are designed to protect against Cyber Threats

Next-Generation firewalls are designed to protect against the ever-evolving landscape of Cyber Threats. They provide comprehensive security features, including application control and intrusion prevention, that defend against known and unknown attacks. In addition, Next-Generation firewalls can be integrated with SD-WAN solutions to further secure branch office locations.

The Pacific Islands are a critical region for many businesses and organisations. The Next-Generation Firewall is an important tool to help ensure the safety and security of these operations. By implementing a Next-Generation firewall, businesses and organisations can protect their assets, data, and reputation from the damaging effects of cyber attacks.

If you’re doing business in the Pacific Islands, don’t wait until it’s too late to invest in a Next-Generation firewall. Contact us today to learn more about our SD-WAN and Next-Generation Firewall solutions and how they can help keep your data safe from cyber threats.

Thank you for reading! We hope this blog post has helped highlight the importance of Cybersecurity in the Pacific Islands region.

Firewall: Traditional Vs Next Generation

By Featured, Network Security No Comments

Next-Gen Firewall (NGFW) vs. Traditional Firewall

The purpose of any enterprise-grade firewall is to protect your network, internal systems and confidential data against intruders and malicious access.
They all share the same basic goal, but specific technologies, features, capabilities and level of complexity could vary immensely.
The two most basic categories for enterprise-level firewalls are traditional and next-generation. NGFW, Next-generation firewall, are the more advanced of the two types. It would offer the most robust protection for your business.
But what would be the differences between the Nest-Generation firewall and traditional firewall, how do the differences can benefit your business?

Traditional Firewall

Traditional firewalls are designed to police the traffic. The traffic in and out of a network will be controlled based on source IP address, destination IP address, port, and protocol.
When we talk about the traditional firewall, we are talking about the traditional stateful firewall. The features of the traditional firewall are limited, such as:

Stateful inspection, traffic is defined as flow instead of isolated packets. Rules can be applied to the traffic flow, and decisions can be made on the behaviours.
Virtual Private Network provides a secured entry for the network when users or systems traverse the public or untrusted network.
Packet filtering helps the network administrator to ensure both ingress and egress traffic is under inspection. Firewalls can terminate the connection initialed by suspicious source on behalf of users.

Next-Generation Firewall

A next-generation firewall does this and so much more. In addition to access control it provides more granularly rules to block modern threats. According to Gartner’s definition, a next generation firewall must have:
  • Standard firewall capabilities like stateful inspection
  • Integrated intrusion prevention
  • Application awareness and control to see and block risky apps
  • Threat intelligence sources
  • Upgrade paths to include future information feeds
  • Techniques to address evolving security threats
The next-generation firewalls should deliver 4 core benefits to your organization:
Application awareness empowers the organization to set specific rules for each application instead of IP and port number. The definition of each application is the core function of NGFW. Traditional applications are defined by port number which can be used by everyone. It is critical to use App-ID to identify traffic flow, and detect evolving threats.
Intrusion prevention system has the capability to actively detect and block intrusions. The detection would refer to the cloud database, which is dynamically updated against zero-day attack
Threat Intelligence provides the firewall and other security appliance with the latest intelligence to detect and stop emerging threats.
Deep packet inspection (DPI) ensures a thorough inspection of the packet’s contents, whereas standard packet inspection only reads the header. NGFW would look after the full context of every single packet.
